Hey Vaibhav
I partially agree with you.. I've seen ppl, who've made office their second home.. Coffee, Gym,Tennis and sometimes simply the air-conditioned environment (when thr is no power at home) keeps them glued to the seat...
But still the articles has tonnes of truth in it.. I mean if even after slogging for 12-14 hours (and really working) and working on weekends too, ppl find themselves struggling with deadlines, I'd say thr's something wrong wth the system

I think this article make monsters of the companies, but have you asked the IT people how many out of the 14 hours do they actually work.

I think the whole work culture has gone for a toss and people come to office at 10:30 and after tea, lunch breaks start working from 2:30 before they take another tea break! They do spend 14 hours in the office, but are they really working

The Indian work culture is messed up and the amount of time spent in the office is directly equated to the amount of work done.....

Nice article to bring to one's notice, Bhatti. What is said in it does ring true to quite an extent.

hey!
Must mention (if u have not already noticed) that I'm not the one to be given credit for this stuff.. I just copied it as I found it just too good!!

And Sumit, U r very right when u say we have a habit of letting foreign ppl step over us... I must mention that such is our servile attitude thet at times I find it odd when I find ppl in US reporting to some senior Indians in our company..

As for the change thing, I wont say that the conditions have changed much.. ( The article is dated November 2005.. I dont find any significanr changes in these 15 months..though at times I believe it's us ,the bachelor crowd, who has to share the blame along with the employers by staying late and sacrificing personal lives for the sake of meeting deadlines..
And yes!! things are surely different in product-companies as compared to the service-oriented ones...

Thanks for an excellent article. I am a software engineer currently in the US and sometimes seriously think of going back to India for family and patriotic reasons. I found your article as the only one that describes the problems faced by IT engineers in India.
We as a country have a long history of bending backwards, lying low letting the white/ foreign man step over. Hence the attitude of Indian services firms to their clients comes as no surprise. I just hope the leaders in the IT industry can wake up in time and move up the value chain by creating world class products rather than just providing services.
Just curious if the conditions you describe have improved lately and if they vary from firm to firm. For instance would service oriented firms like Wipro and TCS behave differently than product oriented firms like Microsoft and Google.
Thanks again for a great article.
